Initial Consultation

Our process begins with an initial 1.5-hour consultation. As an option, you may choose to fill out our informal survey of Executive Function strengths and vulnerabilities and share it with us prior to or at the time of the consultation. There are versions of the survey which can be filled out by a parent, the child, and the teacher. It’s your decision to complete all or none of them. Click below to download the surveys.

PARENT SURVEY?  STUDENT SURVEY?  TEACHER SURVEY?

During this consultation, the student meets for 45 minutes with a member of our mentoring team who discusses foundational concepts in Executive Functions and neurocognitive wiring, while his/her parents meet with a member of our team who focuses on the organization of workspaces. For the second 45 minutes of the consultation, the parents meet with the foundational EF mentor while the student works with the workspace organization mentor.

We recommend that this initial consultation take place at our Learning Headquarters. However, for students who exhibit exceptional difficulties managing their workspace, rooms, etc., the family can make special arrangements for the initial consultation to take place at their home.

As the next step of the EFCNY process, parents select an EFCNY Starter Package.

EFCNY Starter Packages

Following the initial consultation, families may engage EFCNY in one of several starter packages, outlined below.

EFCNY Starter Package: For students with diagnosed or noticeable Executive Function difficulties which are not contributing to extreme anxiety, school failure, school refusal, or loss of self-esteem. The Starter Packet includes:

• Initial consultation with parents

• Initial orientation with the student

15 ninety-minute sessions comprised of: (i) 10-minutes of practices for getting into a good learning space, (ii) 30-minutes of mentoring and practice in a real-world physical activity the student enjoys, (iii) 10-minutes of picture and/or text-based explanations of one important topic in the Executive Function Ecosystem (15 topics over 15 sessions), (iv) 5-minutes of  relaxation, (v) 25-minutes of Executive Function-embedded mentoring and practice in the student’s favorite/strongest school subject, (vi) 10-minutes of session evaluation and homework planning/review, along with specific praise for a student’s efforts and successes during the sessions, plus positive affirmation for what the student can’t do yet.

EFCNY Intensive Package: Designed for students when their school experience is moving toward a crisis, and wherein Executive Function deficits are part of a bigger picture that may include anxiety, self-esteem issues, and other learning issues. The EFCNY Intensive Package includes all of the aspects of the Starter Package (see above) plus two-to-three days per week of EF-embedded academic subject mentoring (one-to-two hours per day). The goal of this relatively short-term intensive work is to level the playing field for the student’s performance in each subject and to create a scaffolding for planning and organization as well as homework problem solving and reasoning. In combining the Starter Package with intensive work, we are able to step in as part of a team (often with therapists and other professionals) to help avoid more damage to self-esteem, school shutdown, etc. The student has the opportunity to work and be mentored joyfully in physical and academic subjects they enjoy, experiencing success as they progress—without the work necessarily being tied to school grades. At the same time, the intensive EF-embedded subject work begins to level the playing field so that school can become less overwhelming, helping move the student toward a positive experience within school.
